Joaquín Fargas, artist and engineer

Joaquín Fargas integrates the artistic, scientific and technological fields in his work. Through science, he communicates the concepts and theories in a playful and poetical manner. Through art, he teaches how to grasp the properties of nature and become aware of its care.
His production is centred on possible or utopian proposals related to life, its preservation and the interrelationship between living beings and the future. In his work, he integrates biological materials and technological media aimed at breaking down barriers and generating possible dialogues and hybrid ecologies.
He was Executive Director of the UNESCO Network for the Popularization of Science and Technology for Latin America and the Caribbean. He is currently Director of the Exploratory Art, Science and Technology Center in San Isidro, Argentina and Director of the Latin American Bioart Laboratory at the Universidad Abierta Interamericana-UAI.
His work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and biennials worldwide. Over the last few years, he has developed a profuse activity entailing execution of works, ‘site specific’ installations, performances and academic conferences in all the continents, including Antarctica.

Work Areas

  • From art taught to understand the properties of nature and become aware of their care. He is currently artistic director of the Latin American Bioart Laboratory at Universidad Abierta Interamericana -UAI.
    His work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and biennials in different regions of the globe. It has developed a profuse activity consisting of the execution of works, installations "site specific" performances and academic conferences in Argentina, Belgium, Costa Rica, Spain, Malaysia, Taiwan and Luxembourg.

  • From science, reports the concepts and theories of a playful, poetic way. Its output is enabled with possible or utopian proposals in relation to life preservation and the interrelationship of the beings and the future. Since 1988 works in the popularization of science and technology. He is currently Director of the Exploratory Art, Science and Technology Center in San Isidro wich he founded in 1996.

  • In his work, it integrates biological materials and technological tools in order to break boundaries and create possible dialogues and hybrid ecologies. Since the beginning of the 2000s, he begun to incorporate digital technologies, communication and robotics in his work. Biotechnology is manifested in the works of Bioart Lab from 2008.
